Lately, I have been thinking about something that sounds absurd at first and then slowly starts feeling oddly practical:
What would it actually cost to build a small private school?
Not a prestige campus with rugby fields, blazer politics, marketing departments, and layers of administration. Something smaller. More intentional. A school for family friends, staff kids, and a trusted community.
A place built around learning rather than institutional theatre.
The thought experiment started with a simple question:
What if a group of families pooled resources and built a high-quality micro-school under a homeschooling framework?
Imagine roughly 50 – 60 students, supported by three general-purpose tutors, with specialist learning coming from the community itself. Parents volunteer time to teach areas they know deeply — software engineering, accounting, business, design, gardening, woodworking, psychology, music, entrepreneurship, law, mechanics, cooking, finance.
Not because everyone becomes a teacher, but because learning becomes communal again.
The model is intentionally simple.
Three tutors would cover structure, supervision, accountability, and academic continuity. Small groups, guided learning, homeschooling systems, project-based education, exams, routine, and mentorship.
The “village” fills in the rest.
One parent teaches coding on Thursdays. Another runs a financial literacy workshop. Someone else introduces photography, robotics, public speaking, or practical life skills.
And naturally, my brain went to the numbers.
Because once you stop imagining a traditional private school, the economics become surprisingly interesting.
The Cost Breakdown
I modelled this around a practical setup:

The biggest surprise?
The fixed costs are not as absurd as people assume.
Below is what a realistic “comfortable but lean” version could look like.

That is before individual learner costs.

Now assume every learner gets a baseline setup.
Technology
Laptop allocation
Assume a basic Mac setup costing roughly R22,000, amortised over four years.
Annualised:
R22,000 ÷ 4 = R5,500/year
Monthly equivalent:
~R458/month
Desk + Chair
Assume:
R3,000 setup
Amortised over five years:
R3,000 ÷ 60 months = ~R50/month
Curriculum + Exam Systems
Homeschool curriculum subscriptions, assessment fees, exam registration, digital platforms:

Or annually:
~R63,600 per learner/year
At 60 students:
R63,600 × 60 = R3.816 million annual operating cost
Call it:
~R4 million/year all-in, allowing contingency.
And that is where this thought experiment becomes genuinely strange.
Because in a world where some individuals earn exceptionally high incomes, the economics start looking different.
A Thought Experiment at the High End
Imagine one very high-earning individual generating roughly:
R10 million annual post-tax income
Would personally funding a community micro-school for family, staff children, and close friends be irrational?
At an estimated ~R4 million annual operating cost, the answer becomes less obvious.
That would represent roughly:
40% of annual post-tax income
Still expensive, unquestionably.
But framed differently:
For the cost of luxury cars, excess lifestyle inflation, prestige memberships, or real estate upgrades, you could theoretically create:
- A deeply intentional learning environment
- Small-group mentorship
- High adult-to-child support ratios
- Practical skill development
- Community involvement
- Technology access
- Educational continuity for dozens of families
And perhaps most importantly:
A social environment shaped by values rather than chance.
Not because elite education guarantees outcomes — it does not.
But because environment matters.
Culture matters.
Peer groups matter.
Mentorship matters.
And one of the more uncomfortable truths of adulthood is that many outcomes compound from the people around us.
But Here’s the Catch
The hardest problem is probably not cost.
It is governance.
It is alignment.
It is trust.
It is avoiding the inevitable politics that emerge whenever people say they want “community” until difficult decisions arrive.
Who decides curriculum priorities?
What happens when parents disagree?
How do you maintain standards?
How do you prevent volunteer enthusiasm from collapsing six months later?
How do you design accountability without recreating the bureaucracy you were trying to escape?
And then there is the uncomfortable reality:
You are not actually building a school.
You are building a culture.
The economics are solvable.
The sociology is harder.
A Bigger Question
I do not necessarily think everyone should homeschool.
Nor do I think traditional schools are obsolete.
But I increasingly wonder whether there is space between the two extremes.
A middle path.
Smaller.
Community-led.
Skills-oriented.
Built around mentorship, mastery, and practical capability — while still retaining academic rigour.
Maybe this idea already exists in pockets.
Maybe it scales terribly.
Maybe it becomes chaos.
Or maybe, in a decade where work, technology, attention, and society are changing faster than institutions can adapt, small intentional education communities become far more normal than we think.
For now, this remains a thought experiment.
But an interesting one:
That for roughly R4 million per year, a trusted community could potentially build something far more personalised than many people assume is possible.
Not a replacement for education.
Just a different way of thinking about it.
